Choosing to hire a 4x4 for travelling around Iceland is the best way to get maximum access to the whole island. One of the big draws for visiting Iceland is our wonderful landscape, which in some cases is only accessible via F-roads. The only cars permitted to drive on F-roads are 4x4 vehicles, due to the challenging nature of some of these highland routes. Sometimes the road surface can be uneven and drivers may even be required to ford shallow rivers.
If you are visiting us in the winter months (November - April) it is recommended to get a 4x4 even if you do not plan to use F-roads, as this will make it easier to navigate any icy road conditions. This is particularly advisable if you intend to drive outside of the Reykjavik area.
